Besides – A Soundtrack for Contemplative Moments

An Ethereal Embrace in Lo-Fi Alternative Rock

Besides is a Hong Kong-based alternative rock project that creates atmospheric soundscapes through a spontaneous, minimalist creative vision. Influenced by artists like Pavement, Radiohead, and The Flaming Lips, their music invites listeners on a journey of contemplation.

Led by lifelong musician David McGinty, Besides began as a side project born out of his various musical ventures. His open-minded creative vision shaped the project’s spontaneous and free-flowing nature, magically capturing unique moments with any equipment at hand, such as old synths, guitars, and vintage recording gear.

Besides blends elements of slacker rock, shoegaze, slowcore, nu gaze, and downtempo. Its songs stem from David’s collaborations with various friends from North Asia, whom he met due to his job’s itinerant nature. It features musicians from places like Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Indonesia, including longtime collaborator Kit Cheung—a fellow musician from Hong Kong and David’s bandmate in Slanted 45, who played a key role in shaping Besides’ debut album and continues to contribute to its evolving sound.

The project creates immersive lo-fi soundscapes that evoke dreamy self-reflection. Its lyrics, marked by a positive mindset and drawing from David’s current life experiences, societal themes, and moments of change, also showcase the project’s organic creativity—with lines often stemming from reflective conversations on the rehearsal room’s stairwell.

Besides released its debut album “The Empty Air” in 2023, a conceptual album about robots building a home for humans on Mars. In 2024, the project signed with Rexius Records, marking a new chapter as it prepares to share more of its immersive lo-fi sound with the world.
